The need for competent translators in today’s global society is ever increasing. Native Spanish speakers represent one of the largest minority groups in the country, and demand for material translated into Spanish is growing rapidly. A high-quality translation requires a person with rigorous training, a high level of accuracy, and an understanding of relevant cultural issues. The University College Noncredit Certificate in English/Spanish Translation Studies teaches students the techniques and procedures needed to produce accurate translations, with a focus on medical, legal, and commercial translation skills.
Our certificate program is open to the public. You do not need to be an Adelphi student to enroll in this course. Anyone interested in a career that taps into their bilingualism, cultural knowledge, and great eye for detail is encouraged to apply. We require:
The English/Spanish Translation Studies certificate program is taught by experienced translation professionals and is conducted entirely online. Students can fit their course of study into their busy lifestyles. Eligible students completing the program will be well prepared to take the American Translators Association (ATA) certification exam.
Students complete the entire program of study online using the Moodle course management system. This system allows you to access your studies at any time. The course work consists of readings, research assignments, dictionary work, online discussion, exams, and extensive practice translations. Students will be translating a wide variety of material including medical and legal documents, business proposals and reports, academic texts, and research and literary works. The program includes study equating to 120 hours of traditional classroom instruction and includes six separate components. Each program component takes approximately five weeks to complete, and the entire program can be completed in six months.
This is a noncredit certificate program, but the courses have been approved for University College life experience credit, which can be applied later to a University College degree program.
