University College to Become College of Professional and Continuing Studies

We’re continuing to support nontraditional learners and nontraditional paths in higher education.

Effective July 31, 2017, Adelphi’s University College will be known as the College of Professional and Continuing Studies to better reflect our mission. Below are answers to some of the questions we think you may have about this change.

If I started University College before the name change what name will be written on my diploma?
The last class to graduate with the name University College will be May 2017. Anyone graduating after May 2017 will graduate under the name of the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, regardless of when you started.

I am graduating in May, which means I will graduate under the University College name. If the name changes, how will prospective employers know what University College is?
Your transcript lists the University first, then the college name. In all cases, employers will know your degree was received at Adelphi University, regardless of the college name. In addition, our website will link searches on both the old University College name and the new College of Professional and Continuing Studies to the same page. Adelphi’s Office of the University Registrar will refer any requests for information to the new College of Professional and Continuing Studies.

Why is the name being changed?
In the last several years, University College has grown to include a variety of types of programs and students beyond adult learners, including off-campus, online, veteran, international, interdisciplinary and high school and pre-college students. Our new name better reflects this wide variety of nontraditional learners and nontraditional paths in higher education.

What else is changing within the department?
All of the existing staff, services, faculty and programs that currently exist in University College will continue in the new College of Professional and Continuing Studies. While we continue to expand and encompass new types of students and paths to higher education, our current programs and staff will not change.

Will all the student support services office on campus be aware of the name change?
Yes, all Adelphi departments have been informed, and by the Fall 2017 semester all new documents, applications and forms should be using the new name.

I am graduating in Fall 2017 and would like to request that University College be listed on my diploma. Is this possible?
No. Once the name change has officially taken place all documents including diplomas will have College of Continuing and Professional Studies on it.

I am an alumnus/alumna of University College. Will this name change affect my transcript or diploma?
No, your diploma and transcript are and will continue to be accurate and reflective of the University at the time you attended and graduated. The new name will not appear on either and it is not necessary to update your current forms with the new name.

If you have any additional questions about the name change, please contact us.
